A Mid-Century Inspired Home to Age-In-Place

Our clients’ goals for this custom home was to incorporate their passion for mid-century design and detailing, embrace the natural site and Lowcountry views, and create an accessible dwelling to age-in-place.

Mid-century architecture, which flourished approximately between the 1940s and 1960s, is characterized by its integration of nature, open floor plans, and a focus on simplicity and functionality. This architectural style is often associated with prominent figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, who emphasized clean lines, organic materials, and large glass windows that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design principles reflect a modernist approach, prioritizing form and function over ornamental elements. Mid-century architecture continues to influence contemporary design, celebrated for its timeless appeal and emphasis on connectivity with the surrounding environment.

Stono River Residence

With an affinity for mid-century modern architecture the clients for the Stono River Residence introduced us to their goals for a new house that would sit on the banks of the Stono River. The resulting design is a study of solid planes contrasting with light and transparency. The main living spaces for the couple are arranged on the ground floor with guest rooms above the garage wing for privacy. Materials include stucco for main organizing walls, cementitious siding and cypress soffits and lattice privacy walls.
