ABOUT US

FIRM PHILOSOPHY

Rush Dixon Architects is a solutions-based, contemporary architecture and design firm. For us, a clear understanding of what is being designed, built or re-fashioned is a must, so before we ever put pen to paper we take the necessary time to listen and assess. Results-driven, we design strategically and artfully to create winning solutions that bring value to our clients, whether the goal is a more efficient business, a clearer brand, or a more functional, livable custom residence. We believe that modern design is not found solely in the materials, but rather through the pursuit of better spaces for living and doing business. Rush Dixon Architects is woman-owned and small by design.

HISTORY

Rush Dixon + Judy Maragioglio Dixon met during architecture school at Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture + Urban Studies. A studio assignment introduced them to Clark + Menefee’s Middleton Inn and Charleston at large in the early 1990s, which led to putting feet on the ground soon after graduation. The next chapter was spent studying the architecture of the area and working for thoughtful architects and mentors. In 2005, Rush Dixon established a firm focused on commercial and residential projects in and around Charleston, SC. Early projects include the Summerville YMCA at The Ponds and the Mount Pleasant Modern Residence. Rush's passion for clean design translated from architecture to product design in the summer of 2010 during the Great Recession when he founded Rush3 Product Design Studio. His product design work ultimately earned an industry innovation award and several products in the market. In 2014, Judy Dixon joined the architecture studio with the portfolio growing to include the City of Charleston’s Daniel Island Recreation Center, Firefly Distillery in addition to several modern residences.

WHAT MODERN DESIGN MEANS TO US

We are passionate about design, work hard and have fun along the way. Over the years, we have leaned more and more toward minimalism and a modernist approach to our designs while keeping eyes wide open to the environmental and built context. Add in the end user’s programmatic requirements to complete the march towards form following function. Historically, the term ‘modern architecture’ describes an architectural style lacking ornamentation and embracing minimalism, usually by incorporating the use of glass, steel and concrete. Modern design to us means functional, empathetic, sustainable, and edited design. Our derivation of this movement is ever changing with the needs of our clients, construction materials and sustainable strategies. We feel there is power in simplicity and continue to evolve, refine and explore with each design opportunity.

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

“Talent is universal but opportunity is not.” It is clear to us that we are able to do what we love because we were given opportunities in education, industry mentorship and through clients who trust us with their projects. To that end we invest in our local community and the industry at large to help create an equitable landscape for all by supporting the following organizations: National Organization of Minority Architects’ HBCU Professional Development Program, ACE Mentors and Lowcountry Local First.
